Tor Roland

Tor Roland, 81, of Hernando, Fla., died Monday, July 15, 2013, in Huntington, N.Y., surrounded by his family.

A memorial service celebrating Tor’s life will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hernando. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m., until the hour of services. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Tor is survived and lovingly remembered by sons, George Roland (Joanna) of Bettendorf, Iowa, Kevin Roland (Karen) of Custer, Wis., and Lloyd Roland (Karin) of Huntington, N.Y.; two brothers, Odd Roland (Tordis) of Farsund, Norway, Hans Roland (Ragnhild) of New Town Square, Pa.; grandchildren, Erik and Elizabeth of Bettendorf, Iowa and Matthew and Andrew of Custer, Wis.; and brother- and sister-in-law, Lars and Astri Torkelsen of Riverhead, N.Y. Tor was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Tordis.

Tor was born Oct. 13, 1931, in Lyngdal, Norway, the son of Gustav and Agnes Roland. He is a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran of the Korean War and a Purple Heart recipient. Tor married Tordis Andersen, the love of his life, June 20, 1953. They celebrated 58 anniversaries together. They owned and operated Roland Building Corp. in Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. He was a fair and honest businessman, who was well respected in his community and by those who worked with him.

Tor was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hernando, the Citrus Hills Golf & Country Club, and the Scandinavian Club of Beverly Hills. His favorite pastimes were yard work, projects around the house, volunteering at church and The Ted Williams Museum, visiting his cabin in the Catskill Mountains, and cruising with friends. His children and grandchildren were the joys of his life.

Heinz Funeral Home & Cremation, Inverness, are caring for Tor and his family. Special thanks to the Intensive Care Unit at Huntington Hospital for their compassionate care. Memorial gifts in memory of Tor may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Tor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
