Adolph “Al” Plevell passed away January 4, 2017 at Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, Lecanto, FL at the age of 94. Al was born in Rochester, PA the son of Paul and Mary Plevell. He was one of eight children. Al was a 3 year Letterman for the Ram Varsity Football Team in Rochester, PA. After high school he worked in Chicago. He enlisted in the US Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Pacific Theater. He and his first wife Velma and their daughter Diane relocated to Florida due to the cold weather and settled in the St. Petersburg Beach area in the 1940’s. Al started a dry cleaning business in which he became friends with several Pro baseball players who were in the area for Spring Training. He cleaned most of those uniforms which lead to social activities, playing ball and lifelong friendships. His wife Velma passed away after a long term illness and he and his daughter Diane continued the family business.

Al was an avid sportsman. He loved to fish and play golf. He held a record redfish catch of 15 pounds on a 6 pound test line. While in St Pete Beach he met, dated and married his second wife Dorothy. They had a son named John. In the early 60’s the family moved to Citrus County and bought a Fish Camp in Floral City called Moonrise Resort. After 10 years of hard work the business was sold and Al and Dorothy enjoyed retirement. They enjoyed social memberships. Al became an accomplished golfer with a 4 handicap. His achievements included a hole in one at Inverness Golf and Country Club #11 and # 14 holes. He had a double eagle on # 17 Par 5. Al is documented as a Club Champ at the Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL. He was a devout Catholic becoming a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, which in the 60’s, was located north of town by the Sportsman Bowl. Al had also visited Medjugorje where the Virgin Mary appeared to the children. They enjoyed traveling in their Motor Home. He was a charter member of the Inverness Elks. Al was a decorated Navy veteran of WWII.

Al was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy who passed away in Jan. 2008.

He is survived by his daughter, Diane Johnston of Floral City, FL; son John Plevell and his wife Diana of Citrus Springs, FL; two granddaughters Shannon Johnston of Tampa, FL, and Kristen Plevell of Crystal River, FL ; and several great grandchildren and step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren as well as several nephews and cousins.

Al’s family will receive friends at the Heinz Funeral Home from 9:30 am to the hour of services on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Funeral Services will begin at 10:00 am. Private interment will be at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of The Nature Coast, PO Box 41270, Beverly Hills, FL 34464.
